To the shock of many, Marybeth Mendoza, 27, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer in July 2009. She learned about the cancer in June, and doctors hoped that surgery would completely remove the cancerous tumor in her colon. But weeks later, Marybeth learned that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes.

Sadly, this is not the first time Marybeth has faced a major health issue. A lifelong resident of Canaryville, Marybeth now fights two battles - she was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called Arnold Chiari Malformation (ACM) when she was 5 years old. As a child, she suffered from debilitating migraines and endured five brain surgeries from age 10 to 22.

The colon cancer is not connected to ACM in any way and there is no cure for the neurological disease; the surgeries only alleviate the cranial pressure it causes. Many have been inspired by her strength and courage to live a normal life as she remains optimistic that she will overcome the cancer.

Marybeth is currently receiving chemotherapy treatments at Northwestern Hospital every two weeks and undergoes numerous tests every month, but still strives to live life to the fullest when not sick from the chemotherapy. Marybeth has been very grateful for the love and support she has received, but still worries about her mounting medical bills.

As an alum of St. Gabriel School and Mother McAuley Liberal Arts School, Marybeth used prayer as a coping device during her struggles with ACM and still relies heavily on prayer during these trying times with colon cancer.

Marybeth, who went to school for massage therapy in order to heal others, has not worked since 2008 because of the increasing pain and underlying symptoms the ACM causes. Her medical bills are huge as she takes medication for the disorder, which she will need to take for the rest of her life, along with her medication and chemotherapy treatments she receives for the colon cancer.

In order to relieve some of the stress for Marybeth and her family, we are now on a "mission" to help Marybeth cover the costs her insurance does not pay by hosting the fundraiser "Mission 4 Marybeth" on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W 115th St., Merrionette Park . We, the committee, are hoping to answer some of Marybeth's prayers by holding this benefit.

We are seeking your help. Any donation of gift certificates, silent auction items, beverages, food, merchandise for raffle prizes or monetary donations would be greatly appreciated.

Any donation will make a difference. Thank you for your support and generosity.

Sincerely,

Mission 4 Marybeth Committee

DescriptionOn July 28th, 2009, two-and-a-half year old Lauren was enjoying a warm, summer day. No one knew that on this day, her life would change forever. Tragically, Lauren suffered a near-drowning accident that kept her hospitalized for five months, much of that time in the ICU. She has fought hard to get to where she is today. She has had a tracheotomy, a feeding tube, and a permanent indwelling baclofen pump to reduce joint rigidity. Her recovery is also complicated by the occurrence of frequent seizures. She is now undergoing extensive outpatient treatment through Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and requires 24 hour care. Numerous challenges lie ahead for her, and her journey towards recovery has really only just begun. Extended hospitalization, intense rehabilitation and innovative treatment options that could potentially benefit Lauren can be costly, some of which will not be covered by insurance.
Determined to exhaust every effort to help Lauren in her recovery Lauren's family and a caring community of friends have organized the "Loving Lauren" benefit. Please join us on Saturday, April 17th and participate in the many raffles and auctions that have been planned. Admission tickets are $30 for adults & $10 for children over 5 years and include food, beverages, and entertainment. Invite your friends and family members to come and enjoy the talent of an Irish singer, dancers & bagpipers as well as children's entertainment. If you will not be attending $5 and $50 raffle tickets can be purchased in advance.

Share Your Soles!

Share Your Soles is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3). Our mission is simple: To provide gently worn shoes to those in greatest need around the world. Our volunteer network is flourishing. We have touched the hearts of hundreds of thousands, and volunteers in more than 30 states have organized shoe drives and special events providing us the support necessary to put shoes on the soles of children and adults in the most impoverished areas of the world. Share Your Soles is not affiliated with any government, church, political group or other organization. We are a growing group of people who think it's all pretty simple: by giving whatever you can, maybe just an hour or two each month, it's easy to become involved and change the world. Share Your Soles is always looking for people interested in making a difference. Please consider taking a minute to volunteer or contribute online - One dollar buys detergent that washes 1 load (30 pairs of shoes), Ten dollars pays for the packaging of 50 pairs of shoes. Make it a family, school or church project. Take a minute or two to see all the recent media coverage or our travel facts about all the place our soles travel. And remember, it's not all about the shoes.
